Henri-Edmond Cross (1856–1910) was part of the French neo-impressionist group of artists along with George Seurat and Charles Angrand. This mosaic-like watercolor from 1904–05 was painted at his home in Saint-Clair near Saint-Tropez and is influenced by the highly saturated colors of the Côte d'Azur. Cross leaves bare spaces of paper between his broad brush strokes in order to maximize the luminosity of the colors.
